He was 96. LaLanne began working with weights when it was widely thought that the practice would cause heart attacks. Undeterred, LaLanne opened his first gym in 1936 in Oakland, California. In 1951, LaLanne brought his message to an even wider audience with the debut of "The Jack LaLanne Show," which spawned a chain of gyms and ran until the 1980s.
