When actress Mary Jo Deschanel decided to have children with her husband Caleb Deschanel, she decided to give one of her daughters a name that would be easy to remember: Zooey. Zooey Deschanel was born in Los Angeles. Her mother, an actress, and her father, a director, actually named her after a J.D. Salinger novella. While she was young she traveled a great deal, due to her father’s schedule. She has since said that she hated all of the traveling that she had to do as a child, which is completely understandable.


When she was a teenager, Zooey Deschanel attended Crossroads, a school in Santa Monica. There she met fellow actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Kate Hudson, both of whom would become well-known names in Hollywood, and became friends with them. She went a different path, and decided to work in musical theater. She began acting at a fairly young age, as a teenager, and continued to play in roles as she grew older. It wasn’t until 2003, however, that she got her first lead role. She has kept sup her singing as well and has produced music for a few of the movies she has worked in.
